I was examining the newest Mac Pro tower as a reference. I’m not sure, but I think the next generation CPU wouldn’t be available for purchase separately next year and installed directly. Does it support standard memory and SSDs, or is there a QVL from Apple? Is everything required to be bought by Apple, or can various performance levels be combined for better value? You’ve covered a lot of this already—thank you.

It varies. On an Intel Mac Pro you can change the CPU, RAM, SSD and GPU according to the socket support. On the AS models the memory is combined and the PCIE slots don’t accommodate GPUs. Still, you can upgrade SSDs. It’s really pointless to keep a Mac Pro unless you plan to use it as a rack computer. Better go with the smaller Studio version.
