What to Do When No Bootable Drive Is Found
The ASUS laptop is not booting properly. Only the optical and hard drives briefly spin up before silence, with no display visible. After removing the hard drive, I tried booting into BIOS once, but the battery is completely dead—replaced with a new CMOS cell. I placed the ASUS drive in two test computers: Test PC 1 boots to BIOS, though diagnostics show the hard drive as OK, but it reports "No Bootable Drive Detected." Test PC 2 had several drives; after disconnecting all original ones and connecting just the ASUS drive, it takes time to boot normally, and no unusual noises come from the hard drive. I also attempted a factory reset using Test PC 2, but it failed. Thank you.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Test PC 1 boots into BIOS, diagnostic scan confirms the hard drive is functional, yet it reports "No Bootable Drive Detected." This suggests the operating system may be corrupted or missing.
Test PC 2 had several hard drives; all original ones were disconnected and only the ASUS drive was connected. It booted normally to the desktop without unusual noises from the hard drive.
If the drive is slow to reach the OS, it might be failing.
I've tried using Test PC 2 to perform a factory reset on the ASUS drive, but it didn't work.
Are you planning to format the drive?
We need more details. What is the model and SKU of your Asus laptop? How recent is the HDD? Which operating system are we discussing?
Is this a new condition? If not, what was the last action you took before it began?
But test PC2 is able to boot into Windows properly
I checked the Win10 settings and reset the system, but files weren’t saved.
The Asus x551 came with a factory version of Windows 8 that was later upgraded to Windows 10. This issue occurred several years back.
This laptop has faced booting problems for more than a year. I often have to press the power button repeatedly just to start it. The battery has been non-functional for many years.
The most recent incident was a Windows update in the afternoon. I used it the following morning for a few hours without any problems. I tried again later, but it wouldn’t boot at all.
Any explanation for why test PC2 works normally while the original laptop doesn’t? Please help.
