Hi everyone,

I’m considering purchasing a laptop for my parents and would appreciate your advice. Below are some details to consider. Please let me know if you have any further questions or if anything is missing. Thank you all.

1. What is your budget?
$500-$600 (can be increased to $700 if it’s worthwhile)
2. What notebook size are you thinking about?
17-inch display – since their eyesight may decline, a larger screen is preferable when using the laptop without an external monitor.
3. What resolution do you prefer?
I’d aim for a minimum of 1600x900, but higher resolutions like 1920x1080 are fine.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop model?
I think I’d want a mix of both – mostly portable, but sometimes connected to a bigger screen.
5. How important is battery life?
Not critical. I’ll usually have access to a power outlet most of the time.
6. Would you like to play games on your laptop? If yes, please list the titles and the settings you’d like for each.
No games.
7. What other functions do you plan to use the laptop for?
Web browsing, YouTube, Solitaire, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet banking, transferring photos from phone or camera.
8. How much storage do you require?
With Windows 11, I’d expect around 512 GB to be ideal; 256 GB seems to fill up quickly...
9. If you have specific websites in mind for buying, please share the links.
None
10. How long do you intend to keep the laptop?
As long as it serves the tasks listed (6-8 years).
11. What type of optical drive do you need?
DVD ROM/Writer, Bluray ROM/Writer, etc.
None
12. Which brands do you prefer and which ones you don’t? Please explain your reasons.
None
13. Where are you based?
USA
14. Any extra details you’d like to share?
A) Ideally a laptop with an Ethernet port, but they usually don’t come with one now; maybe I could get a USB adapter?
B) More USB ports would be nice; perhaps a hub is needed?
C) It should connect to a monitor – most seem to have video outputs like HDMI or DP?
D) I’m looking for good value in the $500-$600 range; it can be increased to $700 if the benefits justify it.
E) No desire for a touch screen.
15. Any other tasks you’d like to perform with the laptop?
Browsing the web, watching YouTube, playing Solitaire, using Word/Excel/PowerPoint, online banking, transferring photos from phone/camera.
16. How much storage space do you need?
With Windows 11 installed, I’d assume 512 GB would be sufficient; 256 GB seems to consume space quickly...
17. Are there any specific preferences for brands or reasons you dislike certain ones?
None
18. What country are you from?
USA
19. Any additional notes you’d like to add?
A) A USB-to-Ethernet adapter would be great, but they’re rare these days; I might need to find a workaround.
B) More USB ports would be helpful; a hub seems reasonable.
C) A monitor connection is possible – most models include video outputs such as HDMI or DP?
D) I’m aiming for the best value in the $500-$600 range; it can be extended to $700 if it makes sense.
E) No interest in a touch screen.

Based on the budget, screen size, and intended use, the HP Laptop 17 appears to be the optimal choice. This model is highlighted as the top budget-friendly option. Reviews suggest it offers good value for its price range, which is around 650 dollars. Amazon listings show the white variant has readability issues, so the black version is recommended instead. Running a Ryzen processor, the black model provides better performance compared to the white one.

Based on the budget, screen size, and intended use, the HP Laptop 17 seems to be the top choice. This model is highlighted as the most suitable within its price range. Reviews suggest it offers solid performance for its cost.

You can find more details here:

The white variant is noted for poor readability of the keyboard, so consider the black version instead. For example:
https://www.amazon.com/HP-Display-Proces...B0C7HGNKZK

The main drawback of the HP Laptop 17 is the limited number of ports, but at this price point, especially with a 17-inch display, other specifications are satisfactory.

Hey there, your question is clear! Would it make sense to purchase a USB expander or HUB?

Yes, that works when you require additional USB ports beyond what the laptop offers.

Did you really understand what the OP mentioned?
So, @mel2, why are you recommending a gaming laptop for the OP?

From the link it appears to feature an RTX 3050 with a 4 GB mobile GPU, which is not typically considered a high-performance gaming laptop.
