We don't have a clear idea of the speed of the 4090 or AMD's version, but since the 3090 performed well, a 9700K barely kept up. It might be wise to opt for a more powerful CPU now. However, you could wait until the Ryzen 7000X3D chips or the 13th-gen Intel release, then upgrade your components at that time.
You already have the 9700k, you don't lose anything by using it.
Inspect the AM4 socket for any dust or obstructions on the pins. Review the traces on the motherboard or consider swapping it for another CPU to test and check for dirt on the CPU pins.
