Planning to swap out an old 2.5 5400rpm hard drive in a HP 17z-ak000 with an SSD? I’m wondering if the drive has a compression fit, which likely keeps it in place when squeezed. I’m unsure if the SSD will fit properly since it’s thinner than a laptop HDD. Should I just use electrical tape to secure it or is there another way? Also, could the ribbon cable cause any issues with the SSD or power requirements?
SSDs are resistant to shocks and don’t require tight mounting like a hard drive. Using some double-sided tape on the back would suit me. They consume less power compared to mechanical drives, eliminating power-related concerns. There seem to be no compatibility issues.
A 2.5" HDD is likely to be around 9.5mm thick. A 2.5" SSD can be either 7mm or 9.5mm, but the standard is usually 7mm. Often, the SSD includes a spacer ring for this purpose. I have seen some of mine with it.
