Even though I’m sure a fresh installation would be best, I’d like to explore if it’s possible to use my existing boot drive in my upcoming setup. I currently run a pre-configured HP system, and I’ve been preparing a custom PC for some time now. The main issue is deciding what to do with my current boot drive. It’s running Windows 11 Home Edition, but it’s licensed under HP as well. I want to retain all my personal data, games, and operating system, but I’m not sure I can simply transfer the boot drive from my old setup into my new one. My new PC uses an ASUS motherboard, while the HP system is on a proprietary HP board—especially a low-quality HP Pavilion gaming build. TL;DR: Should I go with a clean install and copy everything from my current Windows 11 Home HP computer, or is there another way to move the OS and files to my new custom PC without a full reinstall?

You cannot use the full operating system from your previous setup on this new one. Only files, not programs, should be transferred.

it's never wise, particularly when installing a new motherboard.
copy or back up all necessary files to another place.
this ensures you have all personal files, app settings, game saves, and more ready for use in the new system.
most settings and saved data are typically found in the 'C:\Users' folder or the 'C:\ProgramData' directory.
other files may exist in different locations.
format the drive.
once the drive is ready for use, install it as a boot drive, secondary drive, extra storage, etc.
