What steps should I take to become comfortable with a PS4 controller for the first time?
I have a PS4 controller, it's been sitting there collecting dust, but I need to get used to it. What should I do first as someone new? Also, I'm struggling to make the controller show PS4 buttons in games because Windows 10 is displaying Xbox buttons instead. I've never owned a console or controller before. Can you share some tips and tricks on how to use a controller properly? Also, I need advice on handling movement and aiming at the same time.
What is the intended purpose of this? If you're primarily a PC gamer, you'll likely favor a keyboard and mouse unless it's a racing game. For FPS, using a mouse and keyboard is quite poor.
The only effective method to get accustomed to a peripheral or controller is through consistent and prolonged use. Anyone can achieve this, but you must remain exposed to it over time so muscle memory develops. This applies to both movement and aiming. Practice leads to perfection, and there isn't a shortcut to bypass this process. While I acknowledge mouse and keyboard are ideal for fast-paced and racing games, I still recommend using them for FPS and RTS titles.
Regarding button configurations, changing the display on different platforms like Xbox to PlayStation usually requires third-party software, which is unlikely to exist. This is largely due to Microsoft's control over both Windows and Xbox, as well as integrating Xbox services within Windows. It’s possible that exclusive PlayStation games on PC via Steam could show Playstation buttons, but I haven’t tested this myself. Steam now fully supports Playstation controllers, and Switch joy-con support is available, offering some flexibility. I generally stick to console exclusives and third-person shooters on consoles, while playing PC games elsewhere.
Search for a program named DS4 Windows. It helps the operating system simulate an Xbox One controller. This is important since many games with controller support released after 2010 rely on an XInput API, which requires a particular input mapping. Dual Shock controllers or any non-Microsoft/PC-based devices typically don't work this way. Games that ask you to press specific buttons are just a result of the Xbox controller layout being common. Some Steam games can detect Dual Shock and display the correct button overlay.
