What steps should I follow to maintain my printers?
I have two printers and I need some cleaning routines to restore their proper function.
1 - My Samsung M2020 isn’t handling paper well lately. I suspect the rollers are the problem. How can I clean them?
2 - My Epson WF 77-10 is making noise. Is there a way to clean it or should I consider adding a product for the plastic gears?
Most contemporary printers are designed primarily for disposal, making it difficult to assess their value. These items are frequently out of stock, and the pricing still appears excessively high compared to their actual worth. Considering that a higher-quality printer or an all-in-one device might be more economical if you choose to dispose of them later, it could be the most sensible approach.
The rubber-coated pickup pads and rollers are maintenance items that should be replaced according to a schedule. If they’re no longer in stock, I’ve managed to apply a very thin layer of rubbery glue over them after wiping them with alcohol. I use polysilane glue like G02 Glue or Elmer's Stix-All Cement, but I’m not sure why regular solvent-based rubber cement such as E6000 wouldn’t work either. This method seems more effective than some newer aftermarket rollers!
Plastic gears are designed to be self-lubricating, but the noise comes from wear that creates lash. For instance, with the HP4250/4350 model, you need to replace the plastic swingplate gear every 225,000 pages—similar to when the roller maintenance kit is required. The teeth become noticeably worn and produce a loud noise well before they’re completely worn out. This is just a common issue after decades of use, as these parts remain reliable up to around 1 million printed pages.
If dust from paper coverage interferes with operation and necessitates frequent cleaning, it would be wise to consider using a different type of paper.
I cleaned the rollers on the Samsung and now it appears to catch the paper on the first try. For the Epson, I’ll attempt to clean it as well.
