What steps can I take to maximize the performance of my system?
Hi,
I own an i5 4670k CPU paired with a Z87M-plus motherboard and an RX 590 graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM. My system has 16 GB of RAM in total across 4*4GB configurations. I’m trying to boost gaming performance by increasing FPS, but I’ve found that my current setup isn’t delivering the best results.
My CPU runs at 4300 MHz with XMP enabled (currently capped at 1600 MHz), and I’ve already optimized the GPU via AMD Radeon Software, though Warzone frequently crashes when this setting is active.
What recommendations would you have for maximizing my PC’s potential? Should I consider further upgrading the CPU, GPU, or RAM? Thank you for your help!
The CPU might achieve up to 4.8 Ghz

Keep stability checks. For the CPU I recommend OCCT or Prime95.
For the GPU, play singleplayer games. Skip multiplayer unless you want to lose progress due to crashes.
If CPU overclocking doesn’t meet expectations, consider upgrading your system. CPU, Mobo, RAM. 590 is only slightly better than 580, which is only marginally better than 290x. It’s quite outdated. Of course, 590 could have been released in 2018 but still relies on 2013 technology and might be about 10% faster than a 2013 290x. I wouldn’t have spent more than 10-30 dollars on it. If you use any GPU-based games, I’d also upgrade them.
On the Z87 platform, adding DDR3-2133MHz or DDR3-2400MHz memory can optimize performance, though these kits are not inexpensive even on marketplaces like Ebay. Consider the make and model of your power supply unit, its age, and how you manage heat dissipation for the processor. The BIOS version of your motherboard should also be noted. If you haven’t done so already, upgrading to an SSD is recommended to enhance overall system responsiveness.
Warzone requires a powerful CPU upgrade to improve performance. Switching to a GPU instead of overclocking is a better choice, particularly since you've already optimized it and it remains unstable.
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K 3.4 GHz (Haswell) *4
Motherboard: ASUS Z87M-Plus mATX
Ram: A-Data 8GB (2x4GB) CL9 1600MHz XPG + Crucial 8GB (2*4096MB) CL8 1600MHz Ballistix Elite
SSD/HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 64MB and Intel 330 Series 2.5" 120GB SSD Sata/600 MLC 25NM
GPU: 1 x Powercolor Radeon RX 590 8GB Red Dragon
PSU: Fractal Design Integra R2 650W 80+ Bronze
Chassis: Cooler Master Silencio 352
OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Monitor: ASUS VP247 @ 82 Hz
The PSU is from 2013, I just updated my BIOS on the ASUS website. Noctua NH-U9B SE2 is the CPU cooler. The SSD is mainly used for Windows because it’s compact.
The GPU is relatively new, introduced in late 2019.
What would you recommend for your setup?
I would choose a used 4790K with 4 cores and 8 threads for improved performance compared to just 4 cores in gaming.

My previous setup was a 4670k with a maximum clock speed of 4.3GHz under normal conditions. The CPU is quite constrained due to only four threads, which isn’t very powerful by current standards. Warzone could utilize up to twelve threads if possible. A CPU upgrade would be necessary, but the available option on that motherboard is a four-core eight-thread i7 processor. These are usually overpriced for their performance and would lag behind a modern i3. It’s unlikely you’ll find what you’re looking for unless you can secure an i7 at a low price.
I am currently testing the 4670k at 4,4GHz with the CPU multiplier set to 44, Vcore at 1.295 and VCCIN in auto mode. When I increased the multiplier to 45 with these same settings, one of the workers crashed during a Prime95 stress test. Should I increase the multiplier further? If so, what should the new settings be?
I haven’t adjusted the GPU for overclocking since the automatic overclock caused Warzone to crash and reset the GPU in AMD Radeon. Are there any other options I can try?
My RAM is currently at 1600 MHz with XMP enabled. Should I consider increasing it, and if yes, what voltage should I use? Are there additional settings I should check?
As you can see, I haven’t overclocked before and am new to this. Since I’m unsure whether the CPU, RAM, or GPU is the bottleneck, how can I determine which one needs improvement? Would replacing the CPU be a good idea if I can afford it? Should I upgrade to DDR3-2400MHz RAM instead of my current 1600 MHz units?
A fair price would be selling the current CPU and adding $50 for a 4/8 i7. The GPU upgrade is currently too expensive and not feasible. The RAM speed is acceptable. You might want to spend on a different configuration, such as a 6/12 Intel setup (cheaper than AMD's newer 6core models) for around $400. On the GPU side, you can always lower resolution or details in games.
