What steps are needed to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware?
I might only have to pay $30 a year for the extended W10 support on our "back-up" Dell Precision...which originally began as W7. It was my son's College setup, tailored with both hardware and software for Engineering. I spent too much for such a reliable machine just to get rid of it.
Here is an alternative option that seems similar to W11 - wubuntu.org. It offers several advantages compared to the standard MS W11. It is free of charge yet includes a Pro version. It uses significantly less disk space than the traditional W11. It supports Linux, although it may not be fully compatible with all systems. I haven't personally tested this distribution.
Hello,
I changed my large desktop PC to Windows 11 following recommendations from others, using Rufus and similar tools. However, I’m now noticing that the security updates aren’t being downloaded.
My PC was mounted in September 2017 and has been running smoothly for about seven years. I understand Windows 10 will receive updates until next October, but I’m not very keen on reinstalling it.
Can someone suggest a way to get the security updates on an incompatible system? It might not be possible.
I’m considering upgrading my motherboard and CPU to compatible parts, but my current hardware is still working perfectly—this would be a huge waste. The cost would be around 230€, and I’m unsure what I should choose.
I don’t want to install Ubuntu or Mint OS. I know these systems are good, but I’m not comfortable with them for everyday use.
It seems like Microsoft might have made a poor decision—hundreds of millions of PCs could be wasted. It’s unbelievable. Hopefully, they’ll eventually change their policy and allow people to install Windows 11 in October, facing the reality of potential waste and users who won’t update. Not impossible.
Do you think it would be a mistake to upgrade the motherboard and CPU for this purpose?
I actually ordered the hardware yesterday, but I’m now hesitating.
Could I possibly continue using Windows 11 without the security updates for some time? I have a solid security suite already.
What do you think?
Thanks for your suggestions.
your username needs to carry a different significance, considering this subject.
I completed a clean and genuine fresh installation of Windows 11, but using a 22H2 USB caused an automatic update to 23H2... so far it hasn't progressed beyond 24H2 or newer on this hardware. Before that, I applied a registry fix from version 10 to 11, but it stopped working after the 22H2 release. I don’t think that solution is effective anymore. The only reliable way to get Windows 11 is with supported hardware, otherwise you risk issues. It seems the requirements for running an up-to-date OS aren’t necessary on any system—whether hardware or software-wise, it should be fine. Isn’t it up to the user to decide if they benefit from the OS and its features?
Can you confirm if using a virtual machine with Windows 10 or Windows 11 (without updates) on Linux is safe?
