What should I upgrade first? Please let me know.
Hey everyone! It's been a while since I last upgraded my PC, and now it's time to make some changes. My current setup includes an i7 10700k processor, an RTX 3080 graphics card, and a 1080p display running at 75Hz. I'm weighing two upgrade paths: *Option 1* is switching to a 1080p@240Hz monitor or even 1440p@144Hz with a future CPU and motherboard upgrade; *Option 2* involves replacing the CPU with a 12th/13th generation chip (12700k or 13600k) and getting a new display. I enjoy playing a wide variety of games—from AAA titles to racing, MMOs, and MOBA games—and often multitask a lot while background apps run. I want to be able to play all games at high or ultra settings, but with a 75Hz display, I feel like I'm missing out on the full potential of my GPU for some titles. On the flip side, my 10700k is starting to bottleneck the GPU in certain games. It's hard to decide where to start. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Your system itself is fine. Your 10700k is not bottlenecking it. Get a better monitor, there is absolutely 0 point in buying an expensive system like that with a monitor like that. I would suggest a quality 1440p 240hz IPS one for around 400$, or 165hz. Just dont play on max settings because those tend to be pretty crap anyway.
I believe a slow CPU could be the issue, so upgrading it would make sense first. If buying new hardware is costly, consider the 12th generation Intel or explore an AMD alternative. Saving on the CPU might also free up funds for better upgrades like a monitor.
I’d start with a monitor upgrade before moving to better hardware later. The 10700k remains a solid CPU choice. Opting for 1440p would reduce CPU bottlenecks, making it ideal if budget allows. You might also retain the monitor for future upgrades when you feel the need.
