I have a socket 1366 i7 with 12 gigs of RAM. 💩 (The motherboard failed, so I moved to an i5 on z170 – even with a boost over 1GHz it feels like a step down).
I've tried listing it on eBay several times, but never received any offers. It's now quite affordable – probably around $40.
I don't have any specific projects in mind, but it's still capable of fast performance. I really can't just throw it away!

Finding a functional motherboard is almost impossible these days, particularly one that supports overclocking. Plus, the limited availability of Nehalem chips makes selling those CPUs difficult, leading many users to discard them.

There are numerous activities involving an old CPU. Consider setting up a secondary rig or a file server or an HTPC. Create a simple PC for a family member. For example, I embedded my first CPU, an Intel 8086, in resin as a bit of tech decoration (Techoration?)

My mobo caught fire ;p Don't ask how ;p If that hadn't happened, I would have probably been fixing it even now. It just felt so much snappier than the newer i5 running at a much higher speed. Maybe it was the 8 cores compared to 4 /shrug

A long time back, my girlfriend earned a good income by selling jewelry crafted from my old and unused computer components.

I'd keep it if it still worked, sometimes I come across cheap x58 boards on eBay or marketplace and can use them for other purposes. I own a dual Xeon LGA 1356 system that I use for basic tasks like file sharing and a Minecraft server for my sister at one point.
I had an i7 920 on a gateway Xt60 board, I liked that setup, although the stock 920 was a bit underpowered given the load it handles.
