What PSU is suitable for a retro computer on a 775Dual-880Pro motherboard?
I am organizing my plans to set up a retro PC dual boot system featuring Windows 98 and XP on an Intel Pentium D 945 with a 3.4GHz processor, 2 x 1GB DDR2 memory, and graphics cards ranging from GeForce 7950 GX2 to 8800 GTX/Ultra. The build will include a PCI-E slot for the GPU, an AGP slot for another GPU, a sound card on a PCI slot, an optical and floppy drive, and multiple 2.5-inch drives (including one SATA SSD connected via adapter). I also intend to add a card reader and possibly expand with more PCI devices in the future.
I need a suitable power supply unit that provides all necessary connectors and delivers sufficient amperage across the 3.3V, 5V, and 12V circuits. Since I have limited experience, I want to know if a model like Chieftec GPS-450AA-101A would work and whether it meets the power requirements. Even if it works, should I consider purchasing a used PSU? Are there any modern PSUs that are appropriate for this kind of retro configuration? Would SilverStone Strider series models be suitable? If the suggested options aren’t ideal, what alternative PSU recommendations would you suggest for this specific build?
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Would the Chieftec GPS-450AA-101A work well and provide sufficient power?
Personally, you can choose any aftermarket PSU with a 20+4 pin ATX connector, but avoid poorly built units—otherwise your internal components might be damaged.
Even if it seems fine, buying a used PSU isn't necessarily wise. Used units won't deliver the same power as new ones, and you can't verify their history before purchase.
