What percentage of RAM is available in an 8 GB system leading to FPS stutters?
I recently acquired a new GPU (RX 5500 XT) paired with my APU (Ryzen 5 2400g). I attempted to play games such as GTA V, Battlefield 1, and Fortnite, but encountered unplayable FPS stutters. The performance peaks at 130 fps for battlefield mode, yet drops to just 10 or 20 fps whenever I try to move. I've adjusted the settings to medium/low, but for GTA it still averages around 60 fps with stutters that make the game unplayable, unlike my APU. I expected at least 100 fps, but that’s not the main issue.
I suspect the problem lies with my RAM. My PC usage shows 4.96 GB out of 8 GB total, and when I check the task manager, RAM usage is typically between 40-60% even when no programs are running. I’ve tried using the msconfig tool, disabling startup apps in task manager, ending tasks, but nothing resolved it. I also downloaded the latest AMD graphics drivers (version 20.8.2) and attempted to toggle V-SYNC on/off during gameplay, thinking it might be related to APU RAM allocation. However, I can’t boot my BIOS after adding the discrete GPU, which now leads straight to the Windows login screen.
Anyone have suggestions for fixing the FPS stuttering? Is it related to RAM usage as I suspected? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
If that's the situation, I'd look for malware first, since it's clearly unusual. For a demanding game like Battlefield 1 running on 5GB RAM is typical, I'd also remove any unnecessary startup programs one by one and test. Having 8GB RAM isn't much more than needed now.
