Hi everyone, I'm planning to install Linux tomorrow and am unsure which version to choose. I'm particularly interested in the Mint style, but I don't know which one to get. There are four available: Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, and KDE. Could you recommend the best option for someone new to Linux? You can check the download page here: https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php. Thanks, Patalayus

I’d choose Cinnamon unless your PC is fairly old, then I’d pick MATE.

The device I plan to install has a Pentium processor, so MATE seems like a suitable choice

I will install Ubuntu, as it offers the best support. Mint is essentially Ubuntu with a different skin and some preinstalled apps. For the basic setup, go with the Cinnamon version. XFCE is ideal for low-end machines with limited RAM. MATE suits users who prefer older software and prefer not to upgrade, while KDE is another option you can explore. These are just the desktop environments, so they should function similarly. You can install all of them in one setup and switch between them upon logging in.

Ubuntu isn't ideal for older hardware. Unity demands a lot of resources. Mint is an Ubuntu variant without Canonical's offerings, and it uses various default desktop settings.

Sure, I agree Debian is preferable, but installing GPU drivers and software can be simpler on Ubuntu.

I prefer the Ubuntu version that’s straightforward, I’ve noticed some places requiring you to click 'OK' repeatedly which feels frustrating.
