What model are you looking for?
It's currently a good option—affordable, easy to purchase and maintain, with decent performance for its price. It could be a solid choice for someone looking to move beyond older MMO titles. Not a concern about streaming overclocking or massive storage needs that demand backup systems. Why? I aim to upgrade from six-core setups and want a more modern experience.
What processor do you currently have? If you're running a 6-core chip, an upgrade might not be necessary. The 5800X and 11700K are quicker choices, but if you're looking for a budget option, see if you can find a 10700K or 3700X at a lower price.
Regarding your initial concern, I wouldn't recommend it for an R5 3600... though I've used i5 and R5 models for about ten years and am curious about getting a 'better' experience.
You have a 3600, but what’s really going on for you beyond the strange reason you shared? Why do you need an 8-core instead of more? Your belief that an 8-core is superior is weak.
I’d aim for 12 cores and hit a 5900X, just 100$ more than the 5800X I’d recommend. It’s quite straightforward to manage the heat (NH D-15 is more than enough for this model), and it would bring me back to the shelves. A substantial leap compared to whatever 10-year-old CPU I currently have. On the Intel side, it could be either the 10700k or heavily discounted 10850k. Why choose Rocket Lake? Fewer cores would be better with the extra heat it generates, especially since the clock speed gain doesn’t justify it.
The lowest upgrade I’d consider is a 5800x. Anything lower would be unnecessary and a financial loss.
It's the most demanding CPU load I've ever faced, even at 1440 frames per second.
