I will merge/paraphrase USAF and Skynet:
Disable drobo prior to startup.
Reconnect once the system is loaded into Windows.
Save all critical data immediately.
I've been using Drobo since its first release, and honestly, it's been one of the most reliable devices I've ever owned. I've never had any major issues with it. Now I'm seeing all this 'BACK UP NOW' talk, like my data is about to vanish. In two decades with Drobo, I've only had one hard drive fail, which I replaced without a hitch. Another time, I wanted to upgrade capacity, so I swapped out a drive for a larger one, and boom, everything worked perfectly. What's with the urgent backup warnings? Also, what are your thoughts on Synology?
As mentioned, I truly wanted to like the Drobo.
Me and a few others in my tech circle really enjoyed the idea.
Later updates pushed me away from it.
Backup now is mainly about ensuring you don’t have just one copy of your data.
What happens if the Drobo fails? The drives and data are stored in a very specific format.
You can’t simply connect them elsewhere to retrieve your information.
For Synology...
Thinking about Drobo and dropping it, I opted for a standard PC with plenty of storage space.
A few years later, when considering an upgrade to network storage, I looked at options like a new PC, Synology, or QNAP.
After comparing everything, QNAP came out on top.
I’ve been using it continuously since 2017. I’m likely to switch to another QNAP within the next couple of years.
