Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice on selecting the right CPU for 1440p gaming with an RTX 5080 or the upcoming RTX 6080. I understand there are ways to create bottlenecks, but I’m trying to find the best options. Are there specific charts available, or do I need to analyze the specs and do the calculations myself? For instance, my 10700K seems insufficient for newer RTX models if I want to get the most performance out of it. Would R9 9700X be enough, or should I upgrade further? Also, I do some video editing and general PC work.

There isn't a clear response to this question, especially regarding future developments. The project code name hasn't been announced yet, so it might take more than two and a half years. Faster parts enable other elements to function better until they reach their limits. This depends on the workload and game configurations. 'Special' charts are GPU performance tests using several CPUs. They are fairly typical, though most GPU tests use the fastest CPU available to prevent constraints, essentially comparing each GPU under identical host conditions. Many people refer to bottlenecks when talking about CPUs and GPUs. This term is sometimes used incorrectly. The usual misunderstanding is that adding a quicker component alongside slower ones will create a bottleneck. From a performance standpoint, it usually improves somewhere. What they really mean is that better performance can be achieved if other parts are faster. A typical scenario is comparing an older CPU with a new GPU. Your CPU determines the maximum possible FPS since it controls the game engine, directing the GPU to render frames. Even if you're limited to 85 FPS, adjusting settings, resolution, or textures can help you reach a smoother experience. Changing the CPU would allow you to hit 105 FPS, but only if your current configuration supports it. The challenge is that limits shift based on what you're doing, making optimization a dynamic process. Overall, it's important to note that well-balanced systems perform best. The next GPU from Nvidia is named Rubin. Currently, there is limited data on non-consumer GPUs with HBM at the end of the year. Blackwell was also released at the end of the year but experienced delays.

It relies on the resolution you select; if you go for 4K, an i5 14600k might suffice since GPU usage is high. For 1440p or 1080p, you can opt for a higher-tier CPU, such as i7 or i9, depending on your budget. Not I5 and not Z plus X tier.

I’d likely want a 9950x3d version, especially if those are the options, provided your non-gaming responsibilities are crucial.
