What method should I use to ensure games recognize the right input device?
Hello, I'm a passionate gamer who enjoys various types of games, such as flight simulation and sim racing, which I have the necessary hardware for. I also own an Xbox gamepad for other genres. I have several devices connected, including joysticks, rudder pedals, throttle quadrants, and the Xbox controller. When not in use, I unplug my sim racing wheel and pedals.
The issue I'm facing is that certain games that require the gamepad often fail to recognize it when I have devices like my flight simulation setup. For example, one game I was trying to set up recognized my joystick as the control device. I've tried navigating to Devices and Printers > Game controller settings > Advanced and selecting the gamepad as the preferred device, but this rarely resolves the problem. This mainly occurs with games from Epic or GOG on Steam, where disabling Steam Inputs usually fixes it.
Are there any solutions to address this? I understand that unplugging everything except the gamepad could work, but it would be a significant inconvenience for me. Some flight simulators I use require re-binding controls each time I connect them. Additionally, I switch between games frequently—like flying in a simulator one day, playing a game needing the gamepad, then flying again and switching to another game—so constantly unplugging everything isn't practical for me.
I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you.
The USB switch hub might be the solution since you can toggle between devices and set it to your choice.
Good solution!^^
I've faced a similar issue. With the Driving wheel, Xbox gamepad, and a HOTAS connected simultaneously, in BF2042 for instance, if the HOTAS remains linked, my character will appear vertically elevated and spin around in a circle until I disconnect it. It's quite frustrating. I believe the problem lies with the Xinput. Disconnecting works for me.
i use a usb switch to switch racing wheel configurations between pc and ps5, it functions properly. there are numerous usb switches available on amazon. ensure the device includes a switch with a button rather than just an usb expansion hub.
Thank you all for your advice, I truly value it. I hadn't considered a USB hub before, and that's a great suggestion. I already own one, but it lacks individual switches for each port, which is what you were discussing. Would using the individual USB hub ports to turn devices on or off be a good idea?
This one works well too. It supports both directions—either connect a device to two computers or distribute it across one computer using the toggle switch.
