What method is used to move a Windows 10 license from an older SSD to a fresh PC built with a new SSD?
I purchased fresh PC components and wish to move my Windows 10 license from my previous machine (originally bought as OEM Windows 7, later upgraded to free Windows 10 via Microsoft). The current license is running on a 256 GB SSD. Can I transfer it to my new build (2TB 970 EVO Plus) with fresh MOBO and RAM? If yes, please explain the steps.
*Note: I don’t need any files and intend to start anew, installing everything from scratch and reformatting the 256GB SSD afterward.*
*Note: My Windows 10 license isn’t linked to my Microsoft account since it’s a local setup on the old PC.*
Retail version (Home or pro) and/or MS account should be able to transfer license and activate W10. License also goes by MB, disk doesn't matter but in new system it's questionable if it would BOOT at all.
Thanks SkyNetRising.
I will proceed with these steps. I currently have Windows 10 Home edition. My goal is to move it and then upgrade to Windows 11 using Microsoft's free upgrade, since all the new features are compatible with Windows 11.
Do I plan to just set up the USB media creation drive for the Windows 10 installation for the new SSD?
The transition from Win 7 OEM to Win 10 might have resolved it.
But perhaps it didn't.
oem win 10 license won't activate on a fresh win 11 unless the upgrade to win 11 was done earlier. The physical key works, but the digital license doesn't. He'll need to boot into win 10 first, then upgrade to win 11, and only after that will the fresh win 11 activate properly.
It wasn't an OEM Win 10. It was Win 7 upgraded to 10. However, this updated setup will require a complete OS installation. Either a license for the current version or a new one for Win 10 or 11 is necessary. Attempting to start the existing drive and operating system on the new hardware is likely to fail.
