My scenarios involve creating virtual machines with Virtual Box on Windows 10, working on DevOps projects, and conducting pentesting tasks.
I’m currently using a Dell Inspiron 15 5567 laptop, which displays all four CPUs in VirtualBox. My processor is an i5 from the 7th generation.
This setup makes it difficult for me to rely on any CPU labeled i5, even if it’s a newer generation. Most laptops in Nepal seem to come with i5 12th gen models. I’m not sure why this is the case.
Additionally, based on my experience with Inspiron series, I’ve stopped purchasing Dell consumer laptops. They consistently disappoint me.
I prefer ThinkPads even though they’re more expensive, and similarly with Acer laptops that offer high specs at very low prices.
My concern is whether I should discard this laptop due to its specific CPU or if I can still use it. I want my device to remain functional for several more years. Also, battery life is important to me—I prefer a long-lasting battery. Dell’s issue is that their replacement batteries only last about two hours, whereas the new ones seem to work longer under normal use.
On the other hand, the ThinkPad I received in the office had the same CPU, release date, and was used as-is. It lasted well over five hours, even during heavy usage.

I'm asking how to tell if a laptop is worth buying just by checking its CPU. If I aim for something that stays useful in the future, I need at least 12 virtual CPUs in VirtualBox and 16GB of expandable RAM. I also know AMD models usually don't have upgradeable RAM anymore.

There is nothing future-proof about this. New products offering improved price and performance are regularly released. If they weren’t, there would be no incentive to bring them out. Unless your virtual cpus are restricted to specific cores, there should be no link to processors or threads. Make sure you have enough ram to accommodate all the virtual cpus comfortably. Ram is affordable today. And... installing more ram isn’t always possible. It must come from a compatible package to meet specifications.

Unless your virtual cpus are restricted to specific cores, there should be no link to processors or threads. Make sure you have enough ram to accommodate all the virtual cpus comfortably. in nepal even simple laptops are expensive. politicians say they're helping this landlocked nation become an IT center similar to banglaore or india, while basic laptops cost more than a macbook pro in the usa due to high taxes and the grey market.

I wouldn't overlook a contemporary HP or Dell laptop solely based on your experience with older processors. Classic CPUs use considerably more energy than today's models that employ much smaller and more efficient transistors.
Intel and AMD are constantly improving their laptop CPU designs by using increasingly smaller processes, which often result in extended battery durations.

This highlights that running VMs is extremely power-demanding; expect significant drain when compared to a laptop idle without VMs.
On my machine, the i7-13700H draws only 5W, while the whole laptop uses around 10W when idle. With Hyper-V and a video playback, consumption jumps to 70–90W. The battery life was 45wh for the Lenovo e580 ThinkPad.
From the talks and observations I've made, I'm leaning toward:
- purchasing a used ThinkPad under 30,000 Nepalese rupees, as long as it functions.
- setting up SSH/RDP/Tailscale in my home lab.
- acquiring a PC or Mini PC for the same purpose.
