What makes the G14/2022 a better purchase compared to the Lenovo Slim 5 14"?
Hello fellow enthusiasts.
I'm searching for an affordable, portable gaming laptop. Portability and price matter more than performance here. I already own a high-end gaming setup, so this is just for occasional use while traveling. I’m okay with running older titles on it, so heavy games like Cyberpunk or Hogwarts will stay on the desktop.
However, since I’m in France, shipping costs and the 20% duty add up. The price gap between Lenovo and Asus isn’t as big here as it is in the US, so the cheaper option doesn’t stand out much.
Essentially, it boils down to a refurbished Asus G14 (2022) with a 6800S versus a 2023 model with the 4060 or Legion Slim 5 14 RTX4060.
There’s roughly a $500-$600 difference due to international shipping, currency conversion, and VAT charges compared to last year.
Personally, I lean toward Nvidia over AMD for the GPU, but that $600 difference is significant. It has to be worth it.
It seems both options are beneficial for your needs. If cost isn’t a concern, the focus shifts to minor details between the units. For the LegSlim5 14, there are two SSD slots available, but the RAM is soldered—opt for the 32GB if possible. It also offers better thermal management and performance, and it’s currently available only with an OLED screen, which is a nice feature. The 2022/3 G14 model supports upgradeable RAM (up to 32GB) and has one SSD slot that can handle larger capacities, though it tends to get hotter. It also provides improved audio quality and portability. Considering both current pricing and the last point you mentioned, the Legion appears to be a strong contender.
What about the GPU? Comparing the 6800S to the 4060? Do you believe it's worth $500?
When prioritizing the newest and most advanced capabilities of the 4000 series within a G14, the additional 500 difference could be worthwhile.
