What Linux operating system do you need for your Wireguard virtual private server?
I need to rent or buy a virtual private server so that I can set up a WireGuard VPN. It probably makes sense to use Linux because it works best for this job. Right now I have several choices: CentOS 6 or 7, Debian 8 through 11, Ubuntu 14.04 or 22.04, FreeBSD 12 or 13, ArchLinux (the newest version), and AlmaLinux 8.6. Which one should I pick? All of them let me run WireGuard VPN. I also found a cheaper option that lets only one device connect at a time. If you have any advice, please share it.
I would pick Ubuntu 22 since it's the latest stable version and works for most tasks. Debian 11 could also work because its current stable version is 12. I'd skip CentOS because they moved to stream releases, which isn't what I want right now. FreeBSD isn't Linux at all; BSD is different from Linux entirely. I've never used ArchLinux or AlmaLinux so I can't compare those for sure.
Different tools might exist for the same tasks, but most probably have wg in their default repositories too. Since Ubuntu is based on Debian, things are almost certainly similar there. It's also one of the easiest places to find guides because people often switch from services they've run before to Arch since it offers a rolling release model.
