I am hunting for some good tools to take photos, clips, and text messages from my iPhone 12 Pro Max and put them on a PC running Windows 10. Do you need free or paid apps? I just want something that's easy to handle. Thanks so much in advance.

If you have an internet connection like wifi, you can use one of these apple tools on your phone to make it act like a server. Then you just open the file browser on Windows 10 and go over there to get or move your stuff around. Apps from Readdle and FileApp are good choices because they help you set up this process easily.

You don't actually need any special software to import pictures and videos from a phone. The built-in tools in Windows 10 are enough for that. If you really want another way, you could try an old iTunes install, though it might not work on all devices right now. Thanks for the reply. But something (probably Windows 10) is broken, so I can't import my photos or videos properly. The Photos app starts but then stops with an error message. When I try importing from my iPhone in File Explorer, it crashes the same way. It happens with iTunes too. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the Windows Photo app, wiping and reinstalling my phone (and its driver), and running sfc/scannow. The issue started after I bought an iPhone 11 a couple of years ago. Even buying a newer iPhone 12 Pro Max didn't help. I realized it might be easier to buy some special software instead of fighting the computer myself. I prefer not using iCloud or cloud storage for this.

If you have internet connection (wifi), you could use an apple app called File Transfer Manager on your iPhone. It lets you turn your phone into a server to share files with computers like Windows 10. You can then open the browser or manager in Windows and pick up, download, or move those files over. Apps like Documents by Readdle and FileApp are great tools that make setting this up easy for everyone.

Thanks. I tested both options but got that same error when moving things around. Now I don't know what to try next.

The same thing is happening to my dad-in-law. The trick that worked on me is downloading files bit by bit instead of all at once. It takes more time, but it seems to get the job done.

Which mistakes am I seeing? Once you turn on FTP mode, can you open the iPhone folders using Edge or the built-in file explorer? Is this because of iPhone settings or just another issue?

Here is an interesting quote from another site with a similar problem: Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252089763 Was data transferred from the iPhone 11 to the 12? If so: My guess is that the file system got corrupted or some files broke since all apps are crashing and having issues.
