basically the game we played with my twin eight years ago is quite old. My dad, who remembers better, says it was a downloadable title. Here are some specifics:
You had a base on the left side and had to defend against something—possibly attackers like zombies.
You could gather resources by sending horses to mine trees and rocks, etc. These resources helped you upgrade your walls and defenses.

Edit: It seems archers along the wall were also present. You could upgrade them as well. I don’t recall the quality clearly, but I’m certain if I see it I’ll recognize it.
Edit2: My dad wasn’t 100% sure and it could have been an online game played on a website. Please send any game that fits most of these details. Thanks.
Edit3: The game "Knights of Honor" is similar but not the same. You’d focus on building strong walls. I’m not entirely confident about the last part, but I know you would upgrade your defenses.

So it's not Age of Empires. Was it released about eight years ago or maybe even earlier? You might find similar questions on forums, like this one: https://forums.pcgamer.com/forums/general-gaming.33/

After examining the game via images, it seems overly detailed. It likely dates back more than eight years, as playing it eight years ago would have offered less advanced graphics compared to the RTS you mentioned. The gameplay remains comparable.

It might not have been an older Age of Empires title because the series has evolved significantly over time, with many variations released since the 1990s. There are also other games in the same franchise that could be confused with it. It could easily be mistaken for Age of Empires or even Age of Mythology.

It seems like a plants versus zombies style game really took off, drawing a lot of attention and leading to many copies, making it challenging to locate the exact version you played.

Enemies wouldn't arise from all directions. Only the correct side was involved. Your starting position was on the left, while the foes emerged from the right

I just looked and it's not correct. The game I recall had a wall on the left side. You'd be attacked only from the right. It wasn't a 360-degree view.

Age of Empires is somewhat similar, but you'd only face attacks from the correct direction.

It doesn't resemble an RTS unless it was a small demo map or similar. Try searching for "tower defense game" on Google Images and browse through the results. Adding related terms might help locate it. Keep in mind it could be a mobile or flash title that no longer exists.
