What is the PSU recommendation for the system you're planning to build?
I'm trying to assemble a computer for my friend, who has very strict parents and a limited budget. I found a used GTX 980 for around 65 dollars, which I thought was a great offer. I'm considering getting a standard LGA 1155 motherboard and an i5-3570 processor from Amazon. I already have the necessary RAM, SSDs, hard drives, and a case ready. Now I'm facing the PSU selection part, which I'm not very experienced with. I don't want to risk damaging everything, so I'm looking for advice. I need something affordable but reliable, and I also want to know how to tell if a PSU is good or bad. I've heard some terms but don't fully understand them. Thanks. 😀

This is particularly crucial on platforms such as Amazon, where multiple sellers can offer inexpensive products and generate numerous fake reviews. When familiar with a brand like Corsair, EVGA, or Cooler Master, a solid guideline is to select a unit with at least an 80+ Bronze efficiency. If you have more budget available, opt for 80+ Silver or Gold. Always avoid underpricing your power supply.
I would consider products such as the Corsair CX650M. Priced around seventy dollars, it offers ample room for future upgrades like memory or storage, an 80+ Bronze rating, and a semi-modular design for better cable organization. Should your budget be tight and you’re looking for something under seventy dollars, I’d recommend the Corsair CX550. It still meets the 80+ Bronze standard but has lower wattage and no modularity for sixty dollars. I wouldn’t compromise on the power supply in that case.
For other components, you mentioned needing an LGA 1155 board with an i5 processor. The i5 alone would cost about one hundred twenty dollars. At that price point, I’d prefer the AMD Ryzen 3 4100 paired with an AM4 A520 board for roughly one hundred thirty dollars. The AM4 3570 was released over ten years ago, but for a few additional dollars, the newer AM4 platform offers better performance. RAM compatible with the 4100 would add another thirty dollars. Overall, it’s a worthwhile investment.
