The main reason for updating the BIOS is to ensure proper functionality, but it's important to note this is seldom required and can cause damage if not handled correctly.

If the SSD isn't listed in the BIOS, it might indicate a faulty SSD. Are you aware if it functions with other systems? Also, does your BIOS include an option to turn on or off the m.2 connector? What is the model and brand of the SSD you're considering?

The H81 chipset typically does not support NVMe booting. Some well-known motherboard makers later added this feature via their BIOS updates. However, if you opt for a generic Chinese manufacturer's motherboard, you lose this capability and must rely on external storage only for data access, not booting. You might try modifying the BIOS through forums, but often you need to download a factory version from the manufacturer, which is risky given their unreliable support. For simpler use, consider using SATA for booting.

SSD is a Huadisk Southern Fist M.2 128GB model.
This is the M.2 storage device.
I wasn't able to locate any settings in the BIOS to activate this M.2 slot, though the motherboard includes an M.2 port.

I upgraded the CPU to an I7-4790k and added an SSD. Now I'm attempting to install an M.2 NVMe SSD on this setup.

This can be accomplished as a secondary, non-boot drive. However, avoid forcing an NVMe drive into the boot role. Your H81 chipset doesn't support this. There won't be any significant advantage either. What devices are currently in use?
