What is the minimum acceptable upgrade can I get?
I vowed to avoid this generation, yet I feel compelled by an urge that persists. Now I'm fighting with my own mind. My setup is an i5 8400 from the 8th gen, with a budget ranging from $250 to $400—prioritizing value. What options offer solid performance for gaming and light work? How much performance boost do you think justifies the upgrade? Please share your thoughts.
I wouldn't go for the second generation. You'll need a CPU and board, which will strain your entire budget for just a small improvement.
It seems you're dealing with an Intel setup on a limited budget, and moving to AMD would need a different motherboard. (An AMD motherboard would exceed 150 USD.) Which one are you currently using, as this will affect compatibility?
Are there any delays in the CPU performance? I believe most modern games should run smoothly on that processor without issues. As @tkitch mentioned, upgrading to a newer CPU might improve speed, but you'd also need a compatible motherboard. So it’s probably not worth it unless you’re already experiencing bottlenecks.
Consider selling your components and compare the costs. The cheapest option depends on the model and version you choose. Platform changes aren't as costly as they seem, and your existing hardware still has value. Six threads might be a concern, but you wouldn't pay much for an older 6-core i7 with hyperthreading. An 8-core/16-thread upgrade would be a significant step forward. Your current motherboard should handle the 9900k if it's solid enough. If you can find one at a reasonable price, the 250-400 range might already factor in selling parts.
Prefers newer chips over Ryzen 3000; 10th/11th generation models offer better value and performance.
