Hey there! Since its debut, I've been curious about how RGB RAM modules function. How does the RAM bus supply sufficient power? What handles the lighting effects with their changing power needs? Does this impact the actual RAM performance? And how does the module's programming work? I thought the idea that it uses every single pin wasn't correct. What do you all think? I'd really enjoy seeing this explained!
i would program the rgb section to fetch its commands from a designated ram memory location, using that spot to manage the rgb output. the only requirement would be a software interface designed to communicate with that particular address.
the power section gets its primary voltage via certain pins, typically 1.35 for DDR4. a boost converter raises this to approximately 3 volts, which is sufficient to run the LEDs. since the components consume minimal power, they won’t lead to any instability in the RAM.
Reviewing a random datasheet for DDR4 RAM (https://www.micron.com/resource-details/...72f508c668), the peak current draw for the module at DDR4-2666 reaches around 2A. Considering some premium RAM units can reach up to DDR4-4000, which would boost current usage by at least half (without voltage changes), it seems logical to estimate each DIMM provides a minimum of 4A. LEDs typically consume minimal power. From a random RGB LED component on Digikey (https://www.digikey.com/catalog/en/partg...leds/34398), the sheet indicates roughly 20mA per channel. Since DDR4’s supply voltage is 1.2V, it must be increased to at least 3.3V, meaning each LED could use up to about 165mA. There are likely only two LEDs with a diffused light strip, resulting in a worst-case consumption of around 330mA. The sheet also mentions programmable EEPROM using an I2C interface, suggesting a microcontroller or similar chip might be present to manage commands and basic operations. EDIT: Pins 139, 140, and 141 are I2C connections, allowing communication with the modules if needed. Updated August 4, 2017 by M.Yurizaki
I discovered this helpful guide. I’m curious about adjusting the RGB colors of any RAM you might purchase later. Can I modify the lighting using my motherboard’s RGB software, or do I need the Corsairs iCue app for that purpose? Also, what options exist if I want to change the colors of RAM sticks in a future PC build around 2026?
