Hi, I've been considering purchasing a capture card to record my games. Could you explain how that works? What are the inputs and outputs like? Specifically, what does the male HDMI port connect to?

Your 1080ti can record the games you play with Nvidia GeForce Experience. Your CPU works too, though sometimes you might lose a few frames. You don’t need a capture card.
I recorded everything, not just cool moments, to show cheaters using my GTX 1070. The resolution was QHD during gameplay, and the captures turned out great—just have to cut some time for uploading.

If you possess the 8400 of your signature, it features an iGPU that can efficiently capture games while playing on your 1080ti. The main step is connecting your mobo to any monitor input so Windows recognizes the use of the iGPU; you may also need to activate it in BIOS if it doesn’t appear right away. Use OBS and qsv (quick sync video) for recording. Alternatively, you can try nvenc (nvidia encoder) without modifications, though this may lower FPS on games heavily reliant on GPU. With a capture card, you’d require an external PC input—your device connects to the mobo or GPU via another HDMI port or cable.

OHHHHHHHH confirms your understanding! It seems you're wondering if recording is limited to a single PC. Your idea of using an HDMI cable to the GPU and then connecting it via USB for recording makes sense.

It would require a method to retain visibility of the data sent to the capture card, which can be achieved by duplicating the display to another output on the same card. This allows viewing the captured window without significant delay. However, the main issue is that these cards depend on the PC for encoding, causing FPS to decrease or result in dropped frames during recording.
