I need to understand your setup better. You have a Windows 8 PC with an SSD and a Windows laptop running Windows. When Windows 10 is released, you plan to upgrade to a new SSD on the PC without replacing the old one, then move the old SSD into the laptop for a Windows 10 installation. Your main concerns are: will the laptop recognize the old SSD as a boot drive? Should you simply burn Windows 10 onto a disk and install it there instead? Are there any costs involved? Also, is there a way to install Windows 7 or 8 from an ISO file after upgrading to Windows 10 for free? Thanks in advance! Amit

The laptop needs to start from the SSD. It seems you may need to reinstall 8 to reach the 10th final version.

Copy the old SSD to the new one for a perfect replica. After confirming the copy works, erase the old SSD. Then follow the same steps as before by copying the HDD content back to the old SSD. Now just wait for the release of Windows 10 to proceed with the upgrade.

You might face problems with your drive unless you transfer your HDD to an SSD.

Apply changes directly to both machines, then perform a fresh installation. Avoid exchanging hard drives between devices—it may lead to issues.

Yes, the material matches exactly with the original HDD content. For Windows 7 or 8 users, a Windows update will install it, eventually functioning similarly to updating Windows 10.

You're asking if it's possible to perform a fresh Windows 10 installation without a "wipe drive" feature. It seems you're concerned about the installation process and whether the latest version includes this option.

Unclear if it functions on laptops since they lack the Windows key and only have the OS pre-installed.

The OS is already installed, but you can locate the key in the settings. The key must be unique to this computer. My plan: Set up Windows 10 on my new SSD, then replace the old SSD in the laptop. If everything functions properly, I’ll upgrade it and erase all data so Windows 10 appears on both devices. If needed, I’ll revert the HDD back to the old SSD. I wish I had dual drive slots but... I don’t.
