Windows gains traction because of its popularity; 7-10 would work well, with 10 offering the strongest future security (the only one compatible with DX 12). Ubuntu works decently, though the game choices are limited.

I’d like a completely standalone operating system focused solely on gaming. No Windows or Mac integration needed. A lightweight design with smooth driver compatibility. Steam OS seems close, but DirectX games wouldn’t run there. Performance could be a concern—worth checking further.

SteamOS seems ideal for gaming yet retains many Linux limitations. It lacks support for many titles, most needing DirectX adaptations, though Ubuntu driver compatibility is decent but not flawless. Currently, Windows 10 appears to lead in gaming thanks to DirectX 12, but versions 8.1 or 7 could suit those prioritizing UI familiarity and reliability. Note: Performance-wise, OpenGL-based games should behave similarly across Windows and Linux. PlayOnLinux might assist with certain titles but could affect speed and demand adjustments.
