I’ve got some vintage Asus boards and was looking into the best CPU fit for AM2/AM2+ sockets. Anyone have advice on which options work well?

I think the quickest CPU compatible with that motherboard slot is the AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition, though locating one at a fair cost might be challenging because it's no longer in production.

It was a Phenom II 8750 with three cores. The 4 and 6-core models used the AM3 socket. I’m not super experienced with older chips, but I remember it from that time.

I'm working right now, so I can't look at the boards. I'll make sure to check their website later.

The Phenom 8650 in a complete setup is priced at around £50. It seems reasonable if the value matches its performance and features.

A helpful tip: avoid purchasing top-tier components on outdated systems. For example, Core 2 Quads still retail for $50-60 despite being outdated. The main distinction from the Q9550 is its 170MHz speed and a $25 price tag, while the Q9400 offers around $15 but sacrifices cache and clock speed. If I were evaluating options, I’d consider the Phenom II x4 line. The 940s provide a solid, affordable choice that meets AM2+ requirements.

Even the Athlon II models are available in the low-number range for an Athlon II X4.

Located a few Phenom II x4 940 units on eBay priced between £30 and £40, looks like a solid deal.
