What is the battery life of the new laptop?
Hi everyone,
We've just received a new Asus laptop and want to find out the best way to charge it initially for the longest battery life. The manual suggests plugging it in and charging for 3 hours the first time, but it seems that might mean keeping the battery charged longer than necessary after it's fully charged—could this be a problem? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! D
I recommend charging the laptop until it reaches 100%, then remove it from the power adapter, allow the battery to discharge down to 10% before reconnecting to recharge it again. Newer laptops are more intelligent—they avoid overcharging, but keeping the battery fully charged and not draining it often can help preserve its health over time.
I wouldn't think it's a bad or harmful approach according to the manufacturer's requirements.
Lithium ion, lithium polymer, and lithium [anything] batteries experience the most stress during their charging limits. First, adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Second, many laptops include a battery saver mode that halts charging once it reaches around 80%. This can extend overall battery longevity.
I typically charge to about 90% and then disconnect it, avoiding letting the battery drop below 10% (draining a lithium battery close to empty is harmful). If I need to enter a high-drain scenario, I’ll charge it fully, of course.
A good example of proper care is my iPhone 14 Pro, which was bought in mid-September 2022. It recently transitioned from 100% battery capacity left to 99% remaining in February 2024 (the previous month).
The "3 hours" mentioned in the manual is a standard time frame, as they lack precise information about the battery's condition upon delivery and charging. It could be a week or six months old. Just keep using it for the 3 hours and don't worry.
