Hey guys,
The 9900k should be able to hit 5Ghz on one or two cores when available. I’m using a Z390 Aorus master board and the temperatures are quite good.
My 9900k manages to reach 4.9Ghz easily (as confirmed by HWMonitor), but it consistently stops at 4.9Ghz regardless of the situation—whether it’s light desktop work, internet use, or intense gaming/benchmarks.
I keep HWMonitor open to check the maximum frequency, but it always shows a cap at 4.9Ghz.
What’s needed to push it to 5Ghz? I just want to see it actually reach that level.
And please don’t suggest overclocking, since I’m already familiar with it. I simply don’t want to risk overclocking my 9900k; I just need to understand why it can’t go higher with the stock boost.
Thanks.

Hi everyone,
just wanted to inform you that the CPU didn't hit its maximum turbo speed due to too many background programs running. The biggest issue was the Gigabyte App center with RGB fusion and SIV. I reinstalled Windows and did a light installation this time, disabling some background services and processes. Now my 9900k shows 4.9 and 5ghz without any problems in HWmonitor.

Without overclocking the likelihood of you actually seeing 5.0ghz is slim. The second you step over 2 cores being used your Turbo drops to 4.8GHZ. The other likely issue is one of your clock generators is off by a hair. So you get something like 4.98ghz (4.95 4.99 etc). This is a common rounding issue you see. Depending how I check my speeds i get anywhere from 4.2GHZ to 4.19ghz.

The chances of actually observing a 5.0ghz are low without overclocking. Once you surpass using two cores, your Turbo drops to around 4.8GHZ. Another possible problem is a slight misalignment in one of your clock generators, resulting in values like 4.98ghz (often rounded). This rounding issue is typical. Depending on how I measure speeds, I see between 4.2GHZ and 4.19ghz. It seems the Windows scheduler might be allocating more than two cores simultaneously, especially with background tasks. From my experience, even single-threaded benchmarks like cinebench single core often fail to reach this level. I’m curious how others manage to achieve 5Ghz in stock mode, as seen by many YouTubers.

The maximum boost happens only when thermal limits aren't reached. Perhaps improved cooling is needed, and using just one core might help. If you're familiar with overclocking, this seems like an unusual question.

atomicWAR :
Also what are your temps?
Like i said, temps are fine.. high 20's - 30's on idle and 70 - 75 max temp in cinebench full load (all cores). I'm using noctua D-15. It's not a temp issue for sure.
Any ideas?

Anyone? I'm trying to understand what's going wrong here. The CPU should definitely reach 5GHz when only 1 or 2 cores are active. I question if it's possible for 100% of the time windows to be using 3 or more cores, which would prevent the CPU from ever reaching 5GHz. Any suggestions? Also, 4.9 is easily achievable.

I'd appreciate any resources or advice from people experienced with the 9900k. Thanks.

Assaf Patishi is seeking advice on why the CPU isn't reaching 5ghz despite having 1 or 2 cores active. He questions whether 100% of the time windows actually utilize 3 or more cores, which he believes wouldn't allow the CPU to hit 5ghz. He asks for suggestions and references to forums with experienced users about the 9900k.
