I'm connected to the gigabit internet and need to check my cables. Probably already own several gigabit ones. If not, maybe a remote setup like motion detectors and lights would work until high-speed internet becomes common.

I'm not sure about a NIC that directly handles 40Gbps over RJ45, but you might need a QSFP+ interface for that speed. It's usually limited to fiber or twin-axis connectors.
