I plan on upgrading my Acer Nitro 5's RAM. May I know if I need to ground myself when doing this? I heard that removing the main battery lets you avoid being grounded, but what should I do with the power supply? If I unplug the charger and leave the battery inside, is it okay without taking it out of the laptop?
Grounding takes out the extra charge that builds up in your device. This isn't just for the battery inside; it's a big deal if you want to keep everything safe. You should buy some anti-static wrist straps and use them before doing anything else. That is your best choice. If you can't do that, touch something metal nearby like a chair or wall instead of the computer itself. Once you have that charge off, you are all set for the upgrade. But if you don't feel any spark, then maybe there wasn't really much charging up to begin with, so now you can just move forward.
You don't have to take the battery out, but if you are working on any parts inside, it's better off to unplug the laptop so you won't accidentally turn it back on before everything is ready. Even though touching something grounded isn't strictly necessary, I think just touching anything that is grounded is enough as long as you don't build up a charge until you're finished with it.
