I recently assembled a PC with an RTX 3050, an i5 12th Gen processor, and a Gigabyte H610 motherboard. However, I mistakenly used a second-hand 600-watt power supply. After using the machine for about two weeks without heavy use—primarily for tasks like MS Word and Visual Studio Code—I encountered a problem. The PC fails to start on one out of every ten attempts; it powers on briefly but then shuts off after a second, while the keyboard and mouse lights remain active, indicating power is present but the GPU and CPU aren’t functioning.

I suspect the power supply might be faulty and plan to replace it with a CORSAIR 650-watt unit. My main worry is whether this usage could have impacted the GPU or CPU, especially since I haven’t used the system much. I’m unsure if any damage has occurred and want to confirm that nothing is broken. During operation, the system has remained stable without crashes or hangs.

I recently assembled a PC with an RTX 3050, an i5 12th Gen processor, and a Gigabyte H610 motherboard. However, I made an error by using a second-hand 600W PSU. After about two weeks of light use—primarily for MS Word and VS Code—I encountered a problem. The PC would start but then the RGB fans would briefly activate before shutting off, while the keyboard and mouse lights remained on. This suggests the power supply is functioning but the GPU and CPU aren’t receiving power properly. My PSU appears faulty, so I plan to replace it with a CORSAIR 650-watt unit. My main worry is whether this will affect my GPU or CPU in the future, given that I haven’t used the system heavily. I’m unsure if any damage has occurred and want to confirm everything is intact. Additionally, the system has never crashed or hung during operation so far.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's important to provide detailed information about your setup. Please list your system specifications clearly, such as:

CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:

Include the age of the PSU along with its make and model. Also, mention the BIOS version for your motherboard at this time.

CORSAIR 650 watt
Corsair is the brand, and 650W is the advertised power rating. Which Corsair model are you considering?

Regarding your PSU purchase, avoid buying used parts—your PSU is essential to the performance of your system.

I get it, so I’ll switch it out while you look for a good PSU for your setup. Also, could you check if the current hardware might have been impacted? Here are the specs: CPU i5 1240F, cooler Ausen A 100 with four custom fans, motherboard Gigabytes H610M S2H DDR4, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD/HDD, RTX 3050 GPU, and a 6OO watt used PSU in a custom chassis. The OS is Windows 11 PRO and the monitor is a DELL model.
