What games SHOULD one buy in 2023 with $100?
Previously not much involved in modern gaming beyond older titles, but now I really want to experience the newest consoles. My concerns about modern gaming outweigh the positives I've heard. Issues like microtransactions, weak narratives, inflated prices, poor quality assurance, frequent updates that don't improve the experience, and a lack of focus on replayability have made it less appealing compared to ten years ago. I'm flexible with any genre and happy to spend my $100 on Steam. While I won't buy these games right now due to an upcoming sale, that shouldn't stop me from suggesting others. I still think BG3, Battlebit remastered, and Payday 3 are worth checking out. Also, I lean more toward multiplayer titles since story-driven games often end after the plot, making them less likely to be revisited. Keep that in mind if you're considering a single-player experience.
I really think Fallout 4 could be worth checking out if you can get it for a good deal. Dave the diver offers an interesting and varied diving experience. If you’ve ever sailed near Scabb Island, you’ll love Return to Monkey Island. Arkane Studio has delivered a clever and challenging narrative in Prey. They also created DeathLoop, which is both quirky and unpredictable.
BG3 is good stuff, definitely worth the price of admission. Warhammer 40k is superb. Titan Quest is more than awesome. Both older but you only have $40 left after BG3
GOG currently offers the Metro series bundle (2033, Last Light, Exodus plus all DLCs) for $10. You can find it here: https://www.gog.com/en/game/metro_franchise_bundle. These titles are excellent post-apocalyptic linear shooters with impressive visuals and strong characters. While they’re essentially a single purchase, the value seems worth it. I’d pair this set with any multiplayer game you prefer and you’ll be well-equipped. I don’t have specific multiplayer picks since I generally avoid them, but Titanfall 2 is a good suggestion. Official servers might still be unstable—some hackers disrupted them recently, so a third-party launcher could be necessary. It’s often available for around $5 on sale. I also recommend Baldur’s Gate 3 and Fallout 4, which are frequently discounted near $10–15. Elden Ring is another solid choice if you enjoy custom builds and frequent saves. Some players enjoy competitive PvP, though I can’t comment on that aspect.
Also really into Hearthstone battlefields. Lots of fun and worth playing again, plus you can try it out for free.
Survivors of vampires are like high-dose cocaine for the mind and a $4 love letter to dishonor. Want some armored core action for smashing mechs? Elden Ring is perfect if you're up for a challenge—though it's tough, but totally achievable as long as you treat it like a free open world where you can laugh at your own strength.
Also take a look at Holocure—it's essentially a free, vtuber-adapted take on Vampire Survivors.
For great value, consider titles such as Witcher 3 complete edition and Fallout 4 GOTY edition. You can keep an eye out for them on Steam sales.
