I possess a vintage gaming setup that my neighbor is considering purchasing for $275. It’s not overly powerful, yet he doesn’t intend to run the newest titles. His system includes an i5 7500 Z170 motherboard, 16 GB DDR4 RAM at 2400 MT/s, a 128 GB SSD, and a 500 GB HDD spinning at 7200 RPM. He’s using a TLC 43S421 TV with 4K resolution and hopes to connect the PC to it. He mentioned potential performance issues on that display, especially for high-resolution content. He’s keen on racing games featuring cars and motorcycles, with GTA 5 being a possibility at medium settings. Based on my research, Forza is out of the question given these specs and TV. I suggest he explore Steam titles that deliver smoother performance, ideally above 30 FPS on moderate settings. Car and racing games aren’t his focus, so I’m unsure of the best options. He previously played Gran Turismo but wasn’t satisfied, so that’s off the table. A demo would be helpful to see if it meets his expectations.

It’s not necessary to stick to a single resolution like 1080. A 4K TV doesn’t require that setting, and running at a lower resolution can improve game performance while still allowing higher settings.

That's a valid concern, but it depends on the specific games in question.

I'm not quite sure about that. I own a pretty big collection of games, and I usually play them in the living room via a streaming connection on my 4K TV at 1080p. No one I play with or have ever noticed it.

Trash aesthetics in today’s games is what I notice. I’d check out titles from the era when the 970 was a standout card, and build my collection from there.

It functions well on TVs since you rarely get close enough to see clearly.

He's searching for a racing experience that blends simulation and arcade elements. While key reseller sites aren't his preference, Project Cars 2 appears to function well there due to expired licenses. Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competition lean more toward simulation but are also viable and likely to be available at low prices. For a more arcade feel, Assetto Coursa and the competition edition could be worth checking out, especially for open-world rally titles like Horizon Series.

Thanks! It's unclear what kind of racing or car games he enjoys, but I'm willing to try.
