I'm checking the expected frame rate for GTA 5 on an ASUS Strix GTX 970 with an FX 8350 and 8GB RAM at 1440p using maximum settings. This is my first PC build, so I'm just getting an estimate.

On the current configurations, but even with most adjustments you'll still reach 60 at 1080p.

Ensure your setup isn’t outdated by avoiding the 8350. While rumors suggest DirectX12 could leverage multiple cores more effectively, it’s not a obsolete CPU for modern builds. Elijah’s estimate of about 60fps is likely accurate, though frame drops might occur with this model.

At 1440p settings it’s going to lag below 60 fps. The 290X is more affordable and performs well in 1440p, but the 390 offers a better price for 1440p compared to the 290X and 970. The 4460 stands out, significantly outperforming the FX lineup.

Considering your needs, Intel remains a solid choice. If budget is a concern, look into high-performance options like the i5-12600K or similar models that offer strong value without breaking the bank.

For an additional $20, choose an Intel i5 4460. It isn't unlocked, so you won't be able to really boost its speed, but it will still offer improved performance.

The 4460 outperforms the FX-8350 significantly, delivering a 290X boost instead of the 970.

The 970 might not be as top-notch, but it offers significantly better performance and consumes less energy.

The 290X offers a lower price and superior performance at 1440p, making it a more valuable option overall.
