I just switched my 1080p projector to a 4k model and started converting Blu-ray discs into .MKV files for my HTPC. This lets me play through my old HTPC, but the 4k content is causing stuttering. My 1080p files still work perfectly, so it seems like an upgrade is necessary for the new setup.
My current configuration includes:
- Intel I3-6300 processor
- 8GB of RAM
- No dedicated graphics card installed
- Onboard HDMI output used previously
My previous graphics card failed, so I opted for the onboard solution.
But is this really what I need?

I would say you're on the right path.

Perhaps it's difficult to state precisely, but it should be.

For playback purposes, GT1030 works well. I've used it for years with an older i7-4770k that ran at 2.4-3Ghz to prevent the fan from spinning too fast. Now I'm running an Intel A380, and everything is functioning nicely so far. There are only occasional minor problems with audio not returning after the TV is turned off—just need to restart the Intel HDMI Audio driver.

Skip DDR4 and opt for a GDDR5 option.

good point as the DDR4 version is about half the performance of the GDDR5 version.

An Intel Arc could perform better with updated codec support:
