I haven't tried Penumbra. I've experimented with various horror titles, but it's hard to pinpoint what I've played. What I enjoy are games that create tension and force you to move cautiously, filled with suspense. Survival horror isn't my favorite, but atmospheric experiences usually appeal to me.

Try Penumbra next. It was developed by Frictional (SOMA), though the interface is a bit different. I was still new to horror games back then, but I recall hearing growls behind a door, backing away from the PC out of fear, only to return and have to force open it—left-click while pushing the mouse... Yeah, I was done by that time.
