What do you think about the DLC additions?
Here are some thoughts on the discussion. Many appreciated the season pass for Far Cry 4, especially since it was affordable at $9. The idea of more content was appreciated. However, some felt that certain DLCs, like those for Dead or Alive 5, were unnecessary and repetitive. They suggested focusing on retail games instead of downloadable content. Overall, there was a mix of enthusiasm and concerns about the direction of DLC development.
More people purchasing DLC raises the likelihood it becomes a common feature. If cosmetics or expansion packs deliver real value, that’s acceptable. Locked DLC on your existing game or disc is something I strongly dislike about DLC. In essence, avoid buying DLC if you want it to disappear.
Certain businesses such as Bioware with Mass Effect 3 have taken advantage of dlc by hiding important story elements behind extra payment barriers, even though they were accessible from the start. I’m fine with cosmetic changes and content released after launch, like expansion packs. However, I don’t support removing parts of the original game just to benefit customers.
I believe it varies depending on the game DLC. Some titles include a lot of additional material through DLC, while others don't. Borderlands is an example where DLC consistently adds significant content. Assassins Creed Black Flag didn't have the same level of DLC as Assassins Creed Unity. Also, DLC helps support developers; if you dislike their products, it's a way to express your opinion. Currently, with Witcher 3 I was considering the expansions pass, but given their performance on consoles versus PC, it seems unlikely I'd invest. There are many pros and cons to DLCs and season passes. If I truly enjoy a game, I'll purchase it; otherwise, I'll skip it.
As long as it isn't the DLC released on day one and you genuinely want to be part of the game (like Mass Effect 3 From Ashes), or if they push prompts about DLC like in a paid mobile game, I’m fine with it. If they add new cars to a racing game, fresh maps for a shooter, or new characters and costumes, I’m okay with that.
