What do you think about buying an Ethernet switch?
My Yuanley 18-port Ethernet Switch with 16-Port PoE (YS20162F-P) died way too soon in less than a year. Is it safe to get some recommendations for a new network switch? I need at least 16 ports out. Amazon is my preferred choice, or maybe NewEgg.
It makes a big change because a POE switch costs a lot more than your current one, especially if it can give the same power. Most APs or security cameras use this type of connection. If you aren't actually needing it, it's pretty easy to find a 16-port unmanaged switch. I'd suggest getting gigabit ports even though your old thing only had 100mbps. There isn't much difference between an unmanaged switch and a managed one because you probably don't need any special features since you aren't sure if POE is required.
I don't need PoE at all. I actually have a gigabyte of fiber optic line. I'm not sure if using it will help with my internet speeds or anything else.
If you want or need those 24 ports, that is fine. A special thing about switches without a password (or "unmanged" as written) is that they work automatically, so you don't have to do anything extra. Basically, they link all the ports together and let traffic flow between any combination of them at full speed, both sending and receiving data simultaneously. You just plug your cables in and it starts working right away.
Do I really have to use those ports? And how many connections do I need from that router?
