I was questioning why Google hasn't made Chrome OS available to everyone yet. Of course, compiling drivers and managing installations could be challenging, but for older machines, Chrome OS might still be a solid option if it were optimized further. What are your thoughts on this? Should Google consider releasing it publicly? Why or why not?

The team behind Chrome OS launching it publicly might affect the market for Chromebooks.

I never would use it, but I think it could help many users. We're discussing Chromebooks, yes? They feel too limited. Relying on an internet connection isn't always reliable. Honestly, I don’t believe they’d care much. They’re not a hardware maker. It’s like a sandwich—just the container for the inside. Similar to how OEMs just hold Chrome and Google services in place. If they could make people adopt it without effort, they’d be happy to do so.

As mentioned by @TheSLSAMG, making ChromeOS available on all devices could negatively impact sales of Chromebooks. Stopping the OS from being exclusive to Chromebooks seems reasonable. There exists Chromium OS, an open-source alternative, which might allow someone to develop a comparable version. However, I’m unsure if it would be valuable for users.

If they share it publicly, it could gain the Linux feel with community support enhancing it for use. It would be sensible for them to launch the OS, especially if it attracts a substantial audience.
