What CPU to choose
What CPU to choose
Hey everyone. Comparing the Ryzen 5 3600 and I7 8700k for your needs—casual gaming, streaming, office work, and a bit of coding—makes sense. Since you won’t overclock, the choice depends on balance. The Ryzen 5 offers better performance per dollar and smoother multitasking, while the I7 8700k provides more raw power for demanding tasks. Given your setup, the Ryzen 5 should be a solid pick for everyday use.
AM4 provides a much stronger upgrade route, which is why I chose it over the 8700K version.
AM4 still holds relevance, while LGA1151 is outdated. The 8700K is designed for overclocking, and the Ryzen 5 3600 offers better performance now and in the future—potentially allowing upgrades to the 5000 series if AMD continues releasing new AM4 CPUs. You may also want to look into a more recent graphics card.
Uncertain about whether the 8700K is suitable for overclocking because of the typo, but any Intel K-series chip is acceptable for OC purposes—since non-K chips have fixed multipliers and can only be adjusted by increasing BCLK, while all Ryzen models are unlocked and can be overclocked regardless.
