So here’s the short version.
I’m considering two CPUs for this setup:
First one: Ryzen 9 3900x
Second one: Ryzen 7 5800x3d

The specs are: RX 7900xt, CPU will be one of these, MPG B550 Gaming Plus, 1000wat PSU from ASUS, 32GB RAM DDR4 at 3200MHz.

I remember an employee at Microcenter suggesting the Ryzen 7 is better than the Ryzen 9, but I’m still unsure now after hearing that.
I mainly use this build for gaming and light video editing/render for OBS.
If anyone can help, I’d really appreciate it!

The X3D is worth using. With both processors in your possession, why not try them out for your specific use cases?

I could possibly try that. Does the X3d offer any capabilities beyond what the 9 provides?

The 5800X3D stands out as the top choice for gaming on AM4 platforms. However, it falls short in productivity tasks due to its reduced core count compared to the Ryzen 9, and its clock speed is marginally lower.

Gaming involves AMD stacked cache layers that greatly enhance performance for gaming tasks. This doesn't mean Ryzen 9s aren't capable gamers—they certainly can—but the 5800x3D still offers notable gains in this setup despite having fewer cores and slower clocks. For my needs, increased core count matters more than extra frames, especially since I rely on these systems for heavy data work. However, if you're just doing light editing, the added frames could be worth it, which is why the 5800x3D is highly recommended in this situation.

Zen 3 represents a notable improvement over Zen 2, with clock speeds roughly 20% higher. Although it doesn't reach peak performance and offers only two-thirds the number of cores, it might still be about 15% slower. For gaming, the 3D VRAM provides a huge benefit depending on the game and your GPU's limitations. Regardless, it won't slow down gaming at all, potentially offering more than 50% speed in certain titles.

People often wonder why the Ryzen 9 stands out over the Ryzen 7. If you were to compare the newer 5900x, it would be more challenging. The 3900x is an older model, and even the 5800x... not the X3D version is still superior for most tasks. The X3D chips offer a significant edge in many games.
