What CPU should I purchase to enhance gaming performance at ultra settings?
I need to upgrade my PC from an i7-8700k. I plan to play the latest games like Battlefield 6 and GTA 6 on ultra settings. I've looked at these CPUs online:
1. Intel Ultra 7 265k
2. Intel Core i9 12900k
3. Intel Core i9 14900k
I'm unsure which one to choose. Any advice would be great. Also, what motherboard should I get to support overclocking and my GeForce RTX 2070?
All three options work well for gaming, but generally the GPU matters more than the CPU in that context. I’d recommend the 14900 for the fastest performance, followed by the 265k and then the 12900, though you probably won’t notice much difference between them in a game.
Intels 14 series sometimes had problems with CPUs failing, so if you choose one, ensure it comes with a warranty and update your mainboard BIOS to the latest version. This helps prevent the CPU from receiving excessive power and breaking.
If gaming is your top priority, consider AMD CPUs as well—they’re top choices for gaming performance.
Does Intel Ultra 7 offer advantages over the i9 12900K? Which motherboard would suit it best?
You don't purchase a CPU alone. You're aiming to construct an entire new setup. Begin by contributing to the Systems forum: *How to Request New Build or Upgrade Guidance* This guide is an adaptation of the Animal's *How To Ask For New Build Advice* Sticky. I developed it since many users are seeking upgrade suggestions here and on the CPU forums, and I believe... forums.
It wouldn't be worth the trouble to look into intel. You can find a 7600x or 9600x at a much lower cost, achieving about 99% of the performance of a 14900K with room for upgrades.
I also advise against using Intel for gaming right now. AMD's current offerings or as fast, stable, cooler, and more efficient, especially with AM5, provide a path for upgrades until around 2027. If you also intend to handle productivity tasks, there might be better options. Otherwise, go with AMD.
