What CPU do I buy
Hi everyone, I'm using a Dell Optiplex 7010 with an Intel Core i5 3570 on LGA1155. I wanted to upgrade to an i7 but noticed my board only supports up to the third generation of CPUs. I found some info online, but I'm not sure if it's accurate—specifically about models like the i7 4820K, 4930K, and 4960X. Are they indeed third gen? Also, can I install the 4960X on my board, or should I go with the i7 3770 instead? Thanks in advance!
Each generation from Intel comes without a built-in chipset, forcing you to purchase a new motherboard each time you upgrade. That’s quite unfair. If I were you, I’d choose the i7 3790k or go for a Ryzen 5 1600 if you’re after a stronger processor.
These are built around third-generation chip designs, but they use a completely different socket—LGA 2011—not the one found in your machine, which is LGA 1155. The 3770 and 3770k are the justifiable choices for an i7 upgrade on this socket. Updated April 30, 2020 by BobVonBob missed the standard 3770
